Unmissable Outdoor Art Exhibits in Greater Palm Springs
When you picture an art exhibit, a sterile museum with velvet ropes might come to mind. But in Greater Palm Springs, art thrives outdoors amid stunning desert landscapes.
From expansive immersive installations to vibrant rotating murals, the region's outdoor art scene offers something for every taste, set against jaw-dropping natural backdrops across desert cities.
Noah Purifoy Joshua Tree Outdoor Museum

Joshua Tree hosts several outdoor art sites, but start with Noah Purifoy's Joshua Tree Outdoor Museum. Spanning 10 acres of innovative "Dadaist junk art," this museum was crafted by Noah Purifoy, founding director of the Watts Towers Art Center. Renowned for repurposing found objects and addressing social issues, Purifoy began these sculptures in 1989 at age 70 and continued until his death in 2004.
His works blend subtle and stark social commentary. Allow ample time to explore the vast site—grab a brochure at the entrance. Plan a return visit, as discoveries await on every walk.
Desert Christ Park

Established in 1951 by self-taught sculptor Antone Martin and Reverend Eddie Garver, Desert Christ Park promotes peace and goodwill. Covering 3.5 acres and sustained by donations, it features over 40 on-site religious sculptures, restored by volunteers.
Pick up a map at the kiosk for a guided tour or wander freely. Enjoy the volunteer-donated birdhouses providing a melodic backdrop, new wrought-iron ocotillo sculptures, and the mid-century Stone Chapel built in just four weeks in 1954 by Frank Garske and Eddie Garver. Its tonal stones and open-air design create a serene space.
Salvation Mountain

Among Greater Palm Springs' outsider art gems, Salvation Mountain stands out for its scale, vibrancy, and backstory. Created by Leonard Knight in Slab City east of the Salton Sea, this massive work covers an entire hill, using an estimated 100,000 gallons of paint. "God is Love" crowns the structure beneath a large cross, inspired by pure love.
Climb parts of the sculpture, explore interior rooms, and admire surrounding found-art pieces like painted vehicles.
Desert Art Collection Sculpture Garden

Home to Coachella Valley's largest fine art gallery, Desert Art Collection also features the valley's biggest sculpture garden near the entrance, beside the lush Lotus Garden. Showcasing diverse, rotating fine art sculptures—some over 6 feet tall—all available for purchase.
Stroll the garden for inspiration amid serene landscaping, unique artworks, and midcentury architecture. It's also ideal for events; email for details.
The Ace Hotel Mural
A hub for style-savvy families, the Ace Hotel & Swim Club rotates stunning murals. The latest, 'Lifting The Sun' by Chicago artist Laura Berger, depicts eight women of varied skin tones lifting a golden sun amid mountains and palms. Berger explores human-nature connections, rituals, and symbolism in desert tones. View it live and linger for a drink—art is meant to be experienced!
