Indio's Thriving Art Scene: Murals, Public Sculptures, and Cultural Events
Indio pulses with a dynamic art scene that celebrates its rich history, vibrant present, and promising future. Art lovers can explore educational murals, commissioned public installations, and annual events highlighting local and national creativity.
Murals
In 1996, Indio launched a mural initiative, partnering with business owners and local organizations to showcase the city's historical, cultural, and artistic heritage. The first mural, a striking depiction of the Taj Mahal by San Francisco artist Bill Weber, was commissioned for the National Date Festival. Since then, nine additional murals by various artists have transformed Old Town, breathing new life into the streets.
These works capture Indio's evolution—from illustrations of an indigenous Cahuilla Village and key industries like dates, water, and electricity to a visionary scene of renewal featuring birds in a modern garden. Prints are available for purchase, supporting the ongoing project.

Art in Public Places
The Art in Public Places program integrates art into Indio's urban landscape, harmonizing buildings, landscaping, and open spaces while enriching daily life for residents and visitors. Highlights include local artist Phillip K. Smith's "One Voice," a unifying sculpture outside the Indio Teen Center, and Buster Simpson's iconic "Oculus Sol," a colorful abstraction inspired by Coachella Valley's agriculture and desert recreation. Its palm frond-inspired bases nod to traditional shelters. View a map of installations online.

Epicenter Projects
Local contemporary artist Cristopher Cichocki founded the nonprofit Epicenter Projects, an artist residency inviting global talents to engage with Indio's desert landscape. Resulting works are featured in a permanent online exhibition, documenting each artist's process and inspirations.

Art in the Square
Every February, artists gather around Indio City Hall to create vibrant chalk drawings, compete for prizes, and offer demonstrations amid live entertainment.
Indio Performing Arts Center
During peak season, the Indio Performing Arts Center hosts diverse performances, from plays and comedy to Chicano R&B and Desert Chamber Orchestra concerts.
Coachella Valley Arts Center
Launched in 2010 by Bill Schinsky to provide affordable studios, the center at 45140 Towne Street now supports 12 resident artists across mediums. They contribute to public exhibitions, art classes for locals and tourists, and multidisciplinary events like installations by Quang Tri or author readings. Check current programming online.
