Discover Kentucky's Hidden Wonders: A Local's 3-Day Adventure in Caves, Mountains, and Waterfalls
The pandemic reminded us to cherish local treasures over distant escapes. Kentucky's backyard boasts stunning caves, mountains, and waterfalls. We sent Louisville native and travel influencer Tyler Glass (@tylerwayneglass) to explore eastern Kentucky on a three-day journey.
A world-traveling photographer, Tyler relished rediscovering his home state. "I often head out West, but it's refreshing to showcase Kentucky's beauty," he shared. "Local spots rival the Rockies in wow factor."

Red River Gorge Geological Area
Distance from Louisville: 2 hours (128 miles)
Tyler and his wife, Danielle, drove to the Red River Gorge Geological Area in the Daniel Boone National Forest. This rugged paradise features 500 miles of trails, sandstone cliffs, and limestone rock faces.
"A world-class climbing spot," Tyler noted. "Routes here rival the toughest globally, with amenities like showers and Miguel's Pizza for climbers."

Tyler kayaked The Gorge Underground, a former mine turned attraction. In a small group tour, headlamps illuminated massive pillars as they glided on calm waters.
"Kayaking and caving combined—unique and spacious, visible for 200 yards. Highly recommended," Tyler said.

Natural Bridge State Resort Park
Distance from The Gorge Underground: 2 minutes (0.9 miles)
Next, they visited adjacent Natural Bridge State Resort Park, a 2,200-acre haven. Skipping the two-mile hike, they rode the 15-minute chairlift for panoramic views of the iconic rock arch.

Hike, canoe, bird watch, fish, or join May-October hoedowns for Appalachian dancing. "Super accessible and not crowded," Tyler said. They camped nearby at Half Moon Arch trail.

London & Laurel River Lake
Distance from Natural Bridge State Resort Park: 1 hour 20 minutes (63 miles)
In London (Kentucky's fourth-largest "London"), they rented bikes from Capitol Bicycles for Laurel River Lake in Daniel Boone National Forest. This 5,600-acre gem offers boating, fishing, waterskiing, and diving.

"A cycling hub hosting events like the Redbud Ride," Tyler said. A first-time mountain biker, he was hooked. "Stunning lake with houseboats only."

They dined at The Abbey Restaurant: BLT, sirloin, and craft beer in a lively local spot.
Cumberland Falls State Resort Park
Distance from London: 40 minutes (30 miles)
At Cumberland Falls State Resort Park, enjoy horseback riding, 17 miles of trails, birding, and fishing. Spot rare moonbows (listed here through 2023).

The 69-foot Cumberland Falls, "Niagara of the South," dazzles with rafting and paddleboarding views.
Pine Mountain State Resort Park
Distance from Cumberland Falls: 1 hour 10 minutes (57 miles)
Kentucky's first state park (1924) in Kentucky Ridge State Forest features Chained Rock, birding, and Wasioto Winds golf course.

At Herndon J. Evans Lodge, they savored the best Hot Brown at Mountain View Restaurant.
Black Mountain Off-Road Adventure Area & Harlan
Distance from Pine Mountain: 56 minutes (45 miles)
Thrilling ATV tours on 7,000 acres at Black Mountain Off-Road Adventure Area. Tyler tackled expert trails: "Beautiful, rugged mountains—worth every penny."

In revitalizing Harlan, a former mining town, new businesses thrive amid towering peaks.

"Kentucky's gorges, arches, caves, and lakes are underrated gems," Tyler enthused. "Home sweet home."
