Santa Fe blends historic traditions with mountain snow and exclusive seasonal events like the fall Fiesta de Santa Fe or February's ArtFeast. Winter brings a unique City Different holiday experience, featuring legendary shops, renowned museums, pristine landscapes, world-class cuisine, and captivating holiday music and performing arts.
What better way to welcome the Santa Fe holiday season than with Aspen Santa Fe Ballet’s The Nutcracker?
Illuminate Your Holidays at Santa Fe Plaza
The historic Santa Fe Plaza, the traditional heart of this Spanish-settled town, serves as the epicenter of local holiday celebrations. Adorned with trees and surrounded by historic buildings, the Plaza comes alive with festive events. Each year, the Santa Fe Model Railroad Club displays model trains chugging around tracks at First National Bank, at the corner of Lincoln and Palace Avenue. The timeless classic The Nutcracker by Aspen Santa Fe Ballet graces the Lensic Theater on December 21.
The magic ignites as lights flicker on the grand pine tree during the annual lighting ceremony on November 29 at 6 p.m. The mayor officiates, but Santa Claus's arrival truly sparks excitement.

A Royal Hometown Holiday Celebration
The Palace of the Governors, the oldest continuously operating public building in the U.S., hosts Christmas at the Palace on December 13 amid this historic Santa Fe Plaza landmark, part of the New Mexico History Museum.
This event recreates an old-fashioned holiday party honoring Pueblo and Spanish settler traditions. Enjoy hot cider, music, merriment, and a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus.

Welcoming Weary Travelers: Las Posadas
Santa Fe enjoys sunshine over 300 days a year, including December, but at 7,000 feet elevation, bundle up for Plaza gatherings. The New Mexico History Museum’s Las Posadas re-enacts Mary and Joseph’s Bethlehem journey with a candlelit procession. Devils appear to taunt, met with booing from the crowd. The event concludes at the Palace with cookies and cider.

Dazzling Displays: Farolitos and Luminarias
Whether called luminarias or farolitos, these votive candles in brown paper bags are a cherished New Mexico tradition now celebrated worldwide. Northern New Mexicans say “farolitos,” Albuquerqueans “luminarias,” and Santa Feans use “luminarias” for bonfires along farolito walks. Experience both downtown on December 24.
