Experience Enchanting Holiday Traditions in the Heart of Santa Fe County
Santa Fe County, at its essence, weaves together deep history, vibrant culture, and time-honored rituals. During the holiday season, the rush of modern life fades, giving way to a serene, reverent ambiance across Northern New Mexico. As Christmas approaches, iconic scents and sights of centuries-old traditions intensify—like the fragrant piñon smoke rising from adobe homes and swirling into the clear night sky. Red and green chile, perfectly festive, is a holiday staple here.

The historic mining town of Madrid, dubbed the “Christmas City,” is a hidden holiday treasure. In its coal-booming past, it powered its own electric plant for mining, fueling legendary Christmas displays so bright that airplanes reportedly detoured for a view.

After declining into a ghost town, Madrid was revived in the 1970s by artists and free spirits. Today, its holiday festivities include a December parade, carriage rides, and a town-wide lights competition. The 2022 Madrid Christmas Open House features weekends of December 3-4, 10-11, and 17-18, with the parade on Saturday, December 3 at 4 p.m.

For a deeply spiritual celebration, visit El Santuario de Chimayo, illuminated by farolitos—paper lanterns with sand and votive candles symbolizing light for Mary and Joseph.

This adobe chapel in Chimayó village, between Santa Fe and Taos, showcases Spanish Colonial architecture with thick walls, bell towers, and a six-foot crucifix. Its famed “holy dirt” from el pocito draws pilgrims seeking healing. At Christmas, hundreds of farolitos glow warmly, inviting reflection on the season's true meaning.

No Santa Fe County holiday is complete without traditional New Mexican fare: biscochitos (anise-cinnamon cookies), posole (pork and hominy soup with chile), and tamales (steamed masa with meat in corn husks). Savor them at Rancho de Chimayó, a 2016 James Beard Foundation America's Classics Award winner, just half a mile from the chapel.
