Authentic Russian Banya Experience in the Heart of Seattle | Banya 5

As you develop a routine going from the 210 degree Russian sauna to plunging into the icy cold 55 degree plunge pool then buoyantly back out and into the Turkish steam room you’ll quickly learn why this routine can become immensely addicting.  Banya 5, a spa in Seattle’s South Lake Union neighborhood, celebrates old world traditions in a clean and chicly simple atmosphere which makes it one of my little city treasures.

The spa is co-ed with bathing suits required and maintains a very comfortable atmosphere.   Don’t be surprised to see people sauntering around in goofy sauna hats; while your first instinct may be to laugh, these hats actually help you stay in the sauna longer and will protect your hair and ears from the heat.  If you don’t have a sauna hat, not to worry, a towel will suffice.  I’d also suggest saving the big meal and booze for after your session at Banya when both will feel welcome verses the contrary.

The experience of spending a few hours putting your circulatory system through stages of intense relaxation and exhilarating awakening will leave you feeling refreshed and invigorated.  I’d suggest while you are in Seattle be sure to make a stop in Russia.
