An Unforgettable Evening at Delta Downs Racetrack: My Thoroughbred Racing Adventure
Have you ever driven along I-10 West and spotted the signs for Delta Downs Racetrack, Hotel & Casino? If you're new to Louisiana horse racing like my husband Bob and I were, you're in for a treat. We recently attended the opening day of Thoroughbred Season, and it was an exhilarating experience!
The essential first step in horse racing is purchasing the Official Program. This comprehensive guide provides detailed insights into each race, including horse profiles, odds, owners, trainers, jockeys, lineage, past performance, jockey weights, and more—far more data than most casual bettors need.
For serious enthusiasts, it's all business. We observed dedicated fans meticulously studying programs, scribbling notes, analyzing stats, and strategizing their bets with intense focus.
My approach? I simply chose the horse with the most appealing name!
Arriving just before post time for the first race at 5:55 p.m., we grabbed our program and eyed Race 1. Horse #8, Lovely in Lavender (15-1 odds), caught my fancy. Feeling lucky, I placed a $3 minimum bet to show (1st or 2nd place). Sadly, she finished 7th out of 10. Lesson learned: Betting on underdogs isn't always wise.
We headed to The Lookout Restaurant for dinner, renowned for fine dining, premium steaks, and fresh seafood. Its expansive south-wall windows offer stunning track views, complemented by a balcony for race-watching and a convenient betting window to keep the action going.

Our early bets mirrored that first result. After a few races, I wised up, consulting odds and "Don’s Picks" on the screens—he boasts an impressive track record.

Finally, I bet $3 to place (1st, 2nd, or 3rd) on a favorite, and it paid off with a second-place finish! Cashing my ticket yielded $3.90—a modest $0.90 profit, but a win nonetheless.
Win or lose, the magic of horse racing lies in the thrill: Predicting winners, tracking your horse's colorful silks, cheering as they thunder past, especially trackside. The scent of sweat and adrenaline, the snorts and pounding hooves kicking up dust—your pulse races with theirs.
