BOOMBOX's Legendary Hot Cocoa: Lake Charles' Ultimate Winter Treat
When I first moved to Lake Charles in the fall of 2019, I set out to experience all the local culinary staples before year's end. Top on the list from residents was BOOMBOX Frozen Pops and Ice Cream's renowned hot cocoa.
Growing up, hot cocoa at my grandmother's house meant Swiss Miss or Nestlé mixes. So, I wondered: how could a simple hot cocoa earn such fame? I was delightfully surprised—it truly lives up to the hype.
To uncover the secret, I spoke with Skylar Pierce, COO of BOOMBOX, at their new South Lake Charles location, owned and operated by local Chris Primeaux. It opened on November 5, 2021, after hurricanes forced the permanent closure of the downtown spot. If you haven't visited yet, it's a must-see!
A vibrant neon "Never Gonna Give You Up" sign welcomes you, alongside a Ms. Pac-Man arcade game for retro fun against those infamous ghosts. Indoor seating includes salvaged record tables from downtown, plus new high-top tables featuring 80s pop culture icons. Don't miss the cassette wall mural and "We Got the Treats!" artwork.

The magic starts with boiling whole milk, Hershey’s semi-sweet chocolate chips, sugar, vanilla extract, and a pinch of sea salt in their temporary Baton Rouge facility. In Lake Charles, it's frothed fresh per order for a fluffy texture, then poured into your cup.
The real star? Their housemade marshmallows, torched for a golden crust and gooey center that melts perfectly into the steaming cocoa.
Lake Charles eagerly awaits its annual return—who wouldn't? A spot serving both ice cream and hot cocoa is irresistible.
