Stand-Up Paddleboarding in Lake Charles: Exploring Southwest Louisiana's Waters
Lake Charles offers endless water-based adventures, from boating and waterskiing to tubing and kayaking. Recently, I experienced the rising popularity of stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) by organizing a group lesson with Paddle Up Boarding Co., joining friends for a memorable outing on the water.

Owner and instructor Shawn Garry greeted us at Prien Lake Park's kayak launch. He fitted us with adjustable paddles tailored to our heights and personal flotation devices (PFDs), then provided a comprehensive overview of SUP techniques, paddling areas, and essential safety guidelines.
After gearing up, we started kneeling on our boards to master the paddle stroke and balance. The true test was standing up steadily.

With focused footing and core engagement, I stood effortlessly. We glided across Prien Lake and into Henderson Bayou. The technique was straightforward: knees slightly bent, paddle dipping alongside the board toward the tail—alternating sides for a steady course. It provided an invigorating workout amid the soothing splash of water, warm sunshine, and natural surroundings, creating a profoundly relaxing escape.

This outing was unforgettable. Add SUP to your Lake Charles bucket list—especially now with ideal warm weather. April 2021 Update: Paddleboards are also available for rent at Lloyd's Country Store and River Raft Rentals. Explore more rental options here.
