The James 710: Elevated Dining and Craft Cocktails in Lake Charles
Upon entering The James 710, I was welcomed by cooling sky blue, white, and matte gold tones, creating a fresh and modern ambiance. Having heard rave reviews through social channels about its elegance, I was eager to explore. Owned by Ben Herrera—who also helms the acclaimed 121 Artisan Bistro and Restaurant Calla—the restaurant features honeycomb-shaped light fixtures near the entrance. A warm, smiling hostess greeted me immediately, setting a delightful tone. I was privileged to interview Ben about the vision for his latest Lake Charles gem at 710 Dr. Michael DeBakey Drive.

Ben emphasized crafting a complete dining experience, where every detail—from entry to exit—harmonizes seamlessly. The result is an atmosphere of freshness: soft upholstered chairs, cloth napkins, modern flatware and dishware, and a knowledgeable, passionate staff. The honeycomb lights evoke bees collaboratively building something intricate and beautiful, mirroring the menu's creation by Chef Michael Breese, Renda Ruiz, the late Wesley Miller, and cocktail innovator Blakelee Kibodeaux.

Named after Ben's grandfather and the building's address, The James 710 honors family roots. Ben's grandparents owned a Boulder restaurant, influencing his path: two years studying nutrition at Colorado State University, followed by culinary training at Emily Griffith Technical College in Denver. Vintage photos of his grandfather, including one with a bobcat, adorn the walls.

The James 710 bridges healthy and indulgent dining, offering both with intention, creativity, and flavor. Many dishes are gluten-free. Ben sources locally from Green Girl Produce for microgreens, Helen St. Bakehouse for artisan breads, J.T.'s Seafood, and Freshko Produce, ensuring seasonal freshness.

Start with the Beetroot Hummus: vibrant red hummus paired with cucumber slices and warm, house-made naan. Add brisket debris for protein. Exceptional.

The Fresh Fish features pan-seared, cornmeal-crusted wild Idaho Rainbow Trout with creamy polenta, corn maque choux, green goddess dressing, and chili oil.

For heartier fare, the Brisket Tacos arrive in house-made tortillas with fresh salsa, pico de gallo, cotija cheese, cilantro, and lime—artfully presented. Pro tip: Use a fork to savor every bite.

The four-page menu devotes three pages to an extensive wine, cocktail, and spirits selection. Expanded dinner hours delight patrons, with drinks presented as artworks. Order varietals to appreciate the spectrum of colors.

The crimson Just Peachy blends lemon vodka and pomegranate.

Savor The James-on-Thyme: Jameson, elderflower liqueur, thyme simple syrup, and lemon juice.

Refresh with the light Cucumber Spritz.

Or spice it up with the Spicy Cucumber Margarita.
