The General's Cabin – A Legacy of Service, Honor, and Tranquil Retreat

The General s Cabin – A Legacy of Service, Honor, and Tranquil Retreat

Location: 5539 HWY 2016, Beattyville, KY 41311

Born on March 18, 1923, in the Appalachian hills of southeastern Kentucky, Jim Little grew up in extreme poverty but possessed an unwavering drive to rise above his circumstances. He walked miles to a one‑room schoolhouse, balancing study with dreams of a better future. With a scholarship from the ROTC program, he earned a degree in engineering in spring 1941 and was among the first Americans deployed in World War II.

Little’s military career spanned nearly three decades, during which he completed 123 combat missions as a Flying Tiger, earned distinction as a Korean War air hero, served as a test pilot during the early jet age, and reached the rank of General at just 40 years old. After retiring, he chose to return to his native hills and crafted a hand‑built cabin on a 40‑acre wooded property, living there in peaceful solitude until his passing in 1995.

As his daughter, I honored his memory by restoring the cabin shortly after his death. To preserve his legacy, the cabin has been available for public rental since 2005. It offers a unique, serene getaway in a historic setting, combining the charm of rustic architecture with the tranquility of nature.

  • Winter Hunts: Golden Eagles Confront Wolves in Western Mongolia

‘She has a big, brave heart,’ a concerned Sailou told me as he bent down to examine Ballipan, his beautiful golden eagle. It was the first time I had been hunting with this vibrant, 60-year-old Kazakh, out on the steppe in Western Mongolia. I had travelled all the way from Britain to experience the way these great hunters live; these men who still use the golden eagle to hunt and kill foxes, and even wolves in the winter time. The fur taken from their prey is still turned into much sought af
