Discover Andalusia's Vibrant Wine Harvest Festivals: Sherry, Flamenco, and Traditions
As summer ends, the grape harvest kicks off wine production across Spain. In Andalusia, this age-old tradition evolves into lively festivals celebrating some of the nation's oldest winemaking heritage.
In Jerez de la Frontera, Cádiz, the Wine Harvest Fairs form the highlight of the Autumn Festivals—declared Festivals of Tourist Interest in Andalusia. From mid-September, savor Jerez sherries and wines, dance flamenco at the Bulería Festival, and watch spectacular horse parades and dressage shows amid music-filled streets.
Early September in Montilla-Moriles, Córdoba, features festivals honoring local wines. An esteemed master of ceremonies—often a political or media influencer—champions the region's vintages. Highlights include wine tastings and music at La Cata Flamenca Festival, plus the Destreza en el Oficio competition showcasing traditional winemaking skills.
In Mollina, Málaga, early September pairs wine with literature. The event opens with an address from a prominent literary figure, followed by a poetry contest and the exhilarating 'ribbon race'—a medieval equestrian challenge where riders spear rings from strings.
Andalusia's rich wine heritage shines brightest during harvest season, blending tradition, skill, and joyous festivities.
