Tenerife Wines: Volcanic Terroir and Flavors That Captivated Shakespeare
The Flavor That Conquered William Shakespeare
Volcanic soils, Atlantic breezes, and meticulous viticulture create the distinctive aroma and taste of Tenerife wines. In the 16th century, these wines were celebrated by Europe's writers, leaders, and monarchs.
Tenerife boasts five distinct wine-growing regions and an ideal climate, producing high-quality wines with fruity, intense flavors that pair perfectly with local cuisine—think cheeseboards or desserts. Standouts include malvasía wines, renowned across Europe since the 16th century. Literary giants like William Shakespeare, Lord Byron, and Walter Scott praised them, while royal courts savored them regularly. With over 100 wineries, visitors can explore unique tastes through guided tours, expert tastings, and vineyard walks. Discover the five protected designations of origin (DOs): Tacoronte-Acentejo, Ycoden-Daute-Isora, Valle de la Orotava, Valle de Güímar, and Abona.
