Top 5 Best Views Over Manhattan: Insider Spots for Iconic Skylines
Back in New York, I'm excited to share more of my favorite off-the-beaten-path spots for capturing the city's stunning skyline. Visitors often ask for the best vantage points over Manhattan, and with its world-famous skyscrapers, it's no wonder panoramic photos are a must. Here are my top five—most free, all unforgettable.

1. Pebble Beach, Brooklyn
This intimate beach between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges has been beautifully revitalized. Brooklyn Bridge Park and the beach now feature stone steps ideal for sunset watching with the Brooklyn Bridge framing the scene. Stay to see southern Manhattan's skyscrapers, including One World Trade Center—the Western Hemisphere's tallest—glow at dusk. Stroll 1.5 miles south through the park to Pier 6 along the East River.
Pro Tip: Nearby eats include Juliana's and Grimaldi's for authentic NY pizza, Shake Shack burgers, Almondine Bakery croissants, and Brooklyn Roasting Company coffee. Time Out Market offers 21 vendors in a waterfront warehouse—don't miss the rooftop panoramas.

2. Top of the Rock
Skip the Empire State Building crowds—Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Center wins for me. See the Empire State Building itself, vast Central Park, and shorter lines. Tickets start at $32 (vs. $52+ for Empire State's 86th/102nd floors). Opt for a $39 Flexible Date ticket online to chase clear skies.
Pro Tip: Add $15 for same-day day/night visits (still cheaper than ESB). Open 8am-midnight; buy tickets online to skip lines.
3. Staten Island Ferry
Free and unmatched for southern Manhattan views unavailable elsewhere. Time it 20 minutes before sunset outbound, return amid lit skyscrapers in golden light.
Pro Tip: Skip pricey Statue of Liberty ferries ($18+)—ferry views are nearly as good with no lines.
4. East River State Park Beach
Further north in Brooklyn, enjoy Williamsburg Bridge to the south, midtown icons like Empire State and Chrysler to the north—a unique river bend perspective.
Pro Tip: Saturdays (Apr-Nov, 11am-5pm), hit Smorgasburg market for 100 vendors: top eats, lobster rolls, ethnic bites. NYC's best market!
5. Roosevelt Island Aerial Tramway
This 5-minute gondola ride over the East River offers close-up Queensboro Bridge and Midtown 'concrete canyons' views. Free with a 7-day MetroCard ($33, MTA-integrated).
Explore Roosevelt Island: southern Four Freedoms Park (free, Tue closed) for UN/Chrysler vistas. North: eerie Smallpox Hospital ruins, Blackwell Lighthouse. See Lonely Planet’s Best things to do on Roosevelt Island. Picnic advised.

Bonus spots: Rainey Park (Astoria), Governors Island, One World Observatory, Met rooftop, Gantry Plaza State Park, Brooklyn Heights Promenade, Greenwood Cemetery. Rooftop bars like 230 Fifth, Press Lounge, PH-D, Le Bain.
Pro Tip: Join a Manhattan rooftop bar crawl for three bars, drinks, skip-the-line, epic views.
