Discover Zozocolco de Hidalgo: A Magical Town in Veracruz

The diversity of Veracruz is in its culture, its landscapes and the several indigenous groups that compose its history from centuries ago. All this has been preserved so everybody could have the possibility of enjoying these treasures. One of these is without a doubt its Magical Town Zozocolco de Hidalgo, hidden among the greenery of the sierra.

 

The name of this Magical Town has its roots in the Nahuatl and means “In The Clay Pitchers”. In the year 1823 the last name “Hidalgo” was added to commemorate the Father of Independence Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla.

 

Zozocolco, as is usually called by its inhabitants, is located to the north of Veracruz adjoining with the Nautla, Juchique de Ferrer, Alto Lucero and Misantla municipalities and to the east with The Mexican Golfo.
The weather at Zozocolco, Veracruz, is warm and mild with an average weather of 24º C, so bring light clothes and a waterproof jacket because the great array of vegetation causes a constant, though light rain.

 

Tonatico and Zozocolco are two old towns that were already established in the region when The Spaniards arrived. In 1568, Tonatico started to be part of Zozocolco, a community with totonaca origins. During the Colony this land farmed vanilla and during the Porfiriato,at the beginning of the XX century, the harvest of tobacco and sugar cane started. Nowadays in the region you will find trees of precios woods like cedar or mahogany.

 

You will get the best view of Zozocolco and of its red roof houses at the Curato Orel. Here you will fall in love for sure of its green hues and of the texture of its vegetation that surrounds this beautiful town full of magic and natural beauties.

 

Don't forget to visit Zozocolco of Hidalgo during the Festival de Globos de Papel de China. In this celebration, the artisans make majestic balloons of tissue paper that can be as big as 20 meters and that turn the sky into a splash of colors.
