The mission of the MAREX Marine Education Center and Aquarium is to develop the public's understanding and appreciation of the numerous coastal marine environments in the state of Georgia, and to foster respect for the beauty and complexity of these environments. The University of Georgia's public saltwater aquarium features representatives of about 50 species of marine life from coastal Georgia.

The MAREX Education Center is located on Skidaway Island, near Savannah. A magnificent, state of the art teaching aquarium and the Educational Building can be found this facility. There are educational exhibits, lecture rooms, four teaching laboratories and two research laboratories. A dormitory and dining room are also operated in support of the marine education program.

The R/V Sea Dawg, a 43 ft converted lobster boat, is moored just outside of the facility and is available to make small cruises for educational purposes. A boardwalk over the salt marsh to the river supports the education program and is an ADA (Americans With Disabilities Act) - sponsored platform which allows handicapped students to participate in the field courses. This boardwalk is part of the ADA approved nature trail.
