The Ethnobotanic Gardens and Woodland Medicine Trail on the grounds of the University of Georgia's Mountain Research & Education Center, showcase plants harvested and often cultivated by early inhabitants of the region. The Native Americans and early settlers used these plants for a variety of medicines, food and crafts. Although many of these plants are considered "weeds," they are valuable to wildlife and pollinators and have an important place in the ecosystem. In addition, visitors can see how native plants can be used attractively in their own landscape.

Guided tours of the Gardens and Cannery Interpretive Center are available on Mondays, May through September (excluding national holidays), from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Garden tours are free. Please arrive for your tour by 12:30 p.m. Group tours can be arranged by contacting Clare Johnston at the GMRE Center at 706-745-2655.
