Since its founding, the Academy Theatre has used an ensemble of actors to create new work and explore classic plays in a new way to leave audiences with the most thought-provoking experience possible. The Academy Theatre was the first integrated theater in the south, the first to use an ensemble system, and is the longest-running theatre company in the southeast.

The Academy Theatre has been recognized all over the country for its contributions to advancing theatrical technique and for launching the careers of some of the most talented people in the performing arts. From noted actors such as Samuel L. Jackson to leading national arts administrators such as Maggie McEnerny (Atlanta Gay Men's Chorus), the Academy is dedicated to getting people beyond the mere audience experience to actual participation and change.
