McIntire Historic District – Salem’s Architectural Heritage

About

In 1981, Salem officially named its largest historic district after the renowned colonial architect Samuel McIntire. The McIntire Historic District spans the iconic streets of Broad, Chestnut, Essex, Federal, and the connecting alleys that weave through the heart of the city. It showcases an impressive continuum of architectural styles that span four centuries, from the mid‑17th‑century First Period homes to early‑20th‑century Victorian and Colonial‑Revival structures. Visitors can walk through this living museum and witness firsthand the evolution of American residential design, as well as the craftsmanship that earned McIntire his legendary reputation.
