About
The Peabody Essex Museum (PEM), founded in 1799, is the oldest continuously operating museum in the United States. Today it stands as one of the country’s largest and fastest‑growing cultural institutions, showcasing a diverse array of art and artifacts that span centuries and continents.
PEM’s programming emphasizes cross‑cultural dialogue, blending historic objects with contemporary artistic responses. Visitors encounter interactive creativity zones, live performance spaces, and guided tours of historic properties, including the 200‑year‑old Yin Yu Tang, a preserved Chinese house that offers a rare glimpse into early Asian architecture in America.
In addition to its permanent collections, PEM hosts rotating exhibitions such as The Salem Witch Trials: Reckoning and Reclaiming, which juxtaposed original 17th‑century documents with modern artistic interpretations. This exhibition was on view until March 20, 2022, and illustrates PEM’s commitment to exploring complex historical narratives through innovative displays.
