How to Balance Long-Term Travel and Remote Work as a Digital Nomad
When I spontaneously embarked on a round-the-world trip in February 2010, my freelancing career made it possible—I simply packed my projects and hit the road. Why toil at a desk when you can explore the world while earning? Combining extended travel with work ensures steady income but requires aligning trips with deadlines. Seven years into this lifestyle, digital nomadism works—if you travel slowly.
For those limited to six months or a year abroad, juggling full-time work, sightseeing, and transit can be exhausting. It took time to perfect my rhythm of traveling, working, and blogging, but these proven rules make it seamless:
Prioritize Clients First
Client satisfaction is paramount—happy clients mean revenue, which funds more adventures. Tempting distractions like Caribbean sunsets must wait. I focus on deadline-driven projects, completing them before exploring or dedicating full days in my Airbnb to work, even if a plaza café calls.
Schedule Strategically
Daily planning is key. Outline goals, set start/end times, and track progress. During intense travel, I alternate full workdays with playdays. For longer stays (two weeks or a month), mornings are for work, afternoons for exploration or beaches.
Rise Early
Unlike pure travelers who sleep in, nomads start promptly. Beginning at 7 a.m. maximizes daylight. Serving Europe-based clients from Latin America, early starts align our online hours.
Cultivate Discipline
Work demands focus amid temptations like hostel parties. View this as a sustainable lifestyle, not a gap year. Stay disciplined to sustain income—proper scheduling lets you join the fun later!
Essential Considerations for Travel-Work Success
Laptop and Cloud Storage
Choose a nomad-friendly laptop: long battery life, lightweight, reliable OS (I'm a Windows user), compact size for writing (larger for graphics pros), and strong specs. Ditch external drives—after two crashes, I rely on cloud storage for all critical files.

Reliable Internet
Nomads need solid Wi-Fi. Scout accommodations in advance to avoid mid-Skype drops or slow uploads near deadlines. Prioritize secure connections to protect against identity theft.

Build in Buffer Time
Anticipate delays: sluggish Wi-Fi, transport issues, noisy spots, or late nights. Extra padding ensures you beat deadlines if smooth sailing, or meet them amid chaos—keeping clients impressed.
