Hiking Cinque Terre: Escape the Crowds on Italy's Iconic Coastal Trail
Escaping the Crowds in Cinque Terre
One of Italy's most picturesque regions, Cinque Terre comprises five enchanting villages—Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso—nestled into steep mountainsides, some clinging to towering cliffs, others hugging tiny fishing harbors at sea level.
These 'five lands' ('cinque terre' in Italian) have gained global fame, drawing waves of tourists. In Monterosso, the first village, early mornings see avid early risers, followed by cruise ship groups from nearby La Spezia. By 10 a.m., the villages buzz with international visitors.
Our proven way to reclaim solitude? Hiking the Cinque Terre Trail between the villages.
Stretching 10 kilometers along the Ligurian coast between rugged cliffs and the Mediterranean, Cinque Terre remained isolated for centuries. Narrow dirt paths once connected the villages for farmers and traders. Today, no roads link them directly, but an efficient train service does. For a crowd-free adventure, however, hike the challenging trails.

Through Vertical Vineyards
Navigating past large tour groups in Monterosso, we climbed 250 stone steps to the trailhead. The crowd noise faded quickly. For the first 20 minutes, we hiked alone through near-vertical vineyards and olive groves.
Breathless and sweaty, we summited the Monterosso-Vernazza section, rewarded by panoramic Mediterranean views. A family and small group passed as we paused. The trail wound through lush greenery, past vines and birdsong. Despite the relentless sun, Vernazza soon appeared below.
Arrival in Vernazza
The uneven, edge-hugging descent demanded caution—travel insurance proved wise. Sun-baked and thirsty, the beach cove spurred us faster. After 90 strenuous minutes, we entered Vernazza's narrow alleys, brushing shoulders in cool stone passages where locals handled daily chores indoors.
Emerging into the harbor plaza, festival-like crowds enveloped us—a daily occurrence. Locals retreat during peak hours. We refueled with pizza and water on central stairs, ideal for people-watching.
Rejuvenated, we headed to Corniglia, the toughest leg behind us.
Perched Atop the Cliffs: Corniglia
This 90-minute stretch offered scant shade and steep, uneven terrain, but stunning vistas compensated. Passing vineyards and gardens, we ascended steps into quieter Corniglia, smaller and less crowded than its neighbors.
We cooled off in the church before wandering alleys to a dramatic cliffside viewpoint.
Time pressed; the Corniglia-Manarola path was closed due to a landslide. Frequent trains linked to La Spezia. We rode the packed 3-minute train to Manarola, skipping a 60-minute hike.
Manarola's bustling main street, lined with shops and eateries, jarred after Corniglia's calm. Another pizza slice rewarded our 3+ hours of effort.
The Path of Love
Refreshed yet weary, we tackled the final 1-km link to Riomaggiore: the paved, flat, railed Via dell'Amore (Path of Love)—the easiest and most popular section.
Couples strolled hand-in-hand, etching names or padlocks in a cherished tradition. We added ours before finishing.
Sunset in Cinque Terre
After 10 km of rugged trails and villages, we relaxed into Riomaggiore near 7 p.m. Tourists departed; locals emerged—grandmas chatting, husbands laughing, kids playing soccer as shopkeepers tidied up.
We paused on the winding road for a serene sunset over the sea—a perfect close.
