Currency & Banking
- The Bermuda Dollar (BMD) is legal tender, pegged 1:1 to the U.S. Dollar (USD), both symbolized by $.
- USD is widely accepted interchangeably; change is often given in USD.
- Exchange Canadian dollars, British pounds, or other currencies at local banks.
- ATMs are plentiful at HSBC Bermuda, Butterfield Bank, and Clarion Bank. Most dispense BMD; HSBC offers USD at branches. Check hotels, stores, or gas stations.
- Visa, MasterCard, and American Express are accepted nearly everywhere.
Money Orders & Travellers' Cheques
Since March 1, 2014, U.S. travellers' cheques and money orders are not accepted due to anti-fraud laws like the U.S. Patriot Act and Bank Secrecy Act.
Telecommunications
Bermuda boasts a world-class telecom infrastructure for telephone, fax, internet, wireless, and roaming services. Country code: +1 441. Direct dialing available.
Pay Phones & Calling Cards
Prepaid international calling cards are available locally. Public phones charge BM$0.50 for local calls (no credit cards). Use cards for long-distance.
Mobile Phones
Most carriers support roaming; confirm with your provider. Rent local phones to avoid high fees.
Electricity
Bermuda uses 110 volts, 60Hz AC—compatible with U.S./Canada devices. UK/Europe travelers need a two-prong adapter.
