Old Town Brunswick Historic District: A Walk Through Georgia’s Colonial Heritage

Newcastle Street, Historic Downtown Brunswick

Coastal Georgia – Brunswick

Founded in 1771, Old Town Brunswick follows a grid of streets and squares modeled after James Oglethorpe’s original plan for Savannah. The city was named in honor of the German duchy of Brunswick‑Lüneburg, the ancestral home of England’s Hanoverian kings. Loyalists in the area kept the original street names after the Revolutionary War, so you’ll still find Prince, Newcastle, London, and Gloucester on modern maps.

Take a guided walking or driving tour to explore the oak‑shaded streets. Guidebooks are available at Old City Hall, 1229 Newcastle Street.
