Salem Museums Honor Women's History Day with Special Programs
Salem Mayor Kimberly Driscoll proclaimed March 29, 2020 Salem Women’s History Day. Special programs will be held at the following museums and attractions around town:
The House of the Seven Gables
Inspired both by his research for the 2016 exhibit at The House of the Seven Gables and the archival collection of Emmerton’s letters, Mr. Moffat’s lecture will highlight an impressive side of Caroline Emmerton, founder of The House of the Seven Gables Settlement Association. Book signing to follow in the Museum Store.
Cost: This event is free for Gables members and Salem residents. $10 for the general public. Registration available at store.7gables.org
Phillips House Museum (CANCELLED)
Join the Phillips House staff for a day of special guided tours focusing on the role of women at 34 Chestnut Street through the years. Free to Historic New England members and residents of Salem ($15 nonmembers). Tours are available on the half-hour. Last tour departs at 3:00 p.m. Please call 978-744-0440 for more information.

Salem Witch Museum
Help commemorate Women’s History Day in Salem with a visit to the Salem Witch Museum to meet two very special women from 1692. In addition to our main presentations, stop in and meet Ann Dolliver and Ann Pudeator, two women living in Salem who were accused of witchcraft during the Salem witch trials. Our costumed reenactors will be in our front vestibule answering questions, discussing the latest events of March 1692, and opening a window into the women’s world of the seventeenth-century.
Our museum presentations are offered at our standard admission prices, but interacting with these Puritan women is free and a great way to get involved with Women’s History Day! Join us for an engaging day of women’s history as we dive into the reality of women’s lives, struggles, and the witchcraft accusations of 1692.

Essex Heritage & Hamilton Hall (CANCELLED)
Hamilton Hall has cancelled their events and programming through the end of the month. Visit their website for more information. Join Emerita Professor of Education at Salem State University, Mary-Lou Breitborde, for a look at the writings of Charlotte Forten Grimké, the difficult world she navigated with dignity and effect, and the role that Salem played in her story. Following the lecture at 3:15 pm will be a walking tour with Salem State Professor of English, Lucinda Damon-Bach, to explore some of the places Charlotte Forten Grimke wrote about in her journal.
Free for all. Registration for walking tour is first-come, first-served at the event, as space is limited. This event is hosted by Essex Heritage and Hamilton Hall.
