Unique Valentine's Day Traditions Around the World
In the United States, Valentine's Day has traditionally centered on celebrating romantic love. As February 14 approaches, Americans rush to flower shops, book romantic dinners, or search online for thoughtful gifts for their loved ones.
Outside the U.S., however, February 14 takes on diverse and fascinating meanings. Here are five standout Valentine's Day celebrations from around the globe:
Philippines: Mass Marriages
Throughout Valentine's week, thousands of Filipinos celebrate love by tying the knot. Many participate in "mass weddings," where hundreds of couples exchange vows simultaneously.
Last year in Rosario, over 700 couples joined such an event. According to the Manila Bulletin, these free ceremonies for local needy couples include venues, food, gifts, photos, and marriage licenses provided by the government—a truly heartfelt tradition.
Japan: Chocolates and White Day
In Japan, women lead the Valentine's Day gifting. They buy chocolates for dates, friends, coworkers, and bosses, often spending up to 10,000 yen, per Business Insider.
Men reciprocate a month later on White Day with white-themed gifts, from cookies to lingerie, balancing the tradition.
Denmark: Snowdrops & Gaekkebrev
Danes add their own flair, gifting pressed white snowdrop flowers and traditional Valentine's cards to friends and admirers instead of roses.
Men send anonymous gaekkebrev—funny poems on intricate paper. If the recipient guesses the sender, she's rewarded with an Easter egg, per Danish custom.
Ghana: Chocolate Day
In 2007, Ghana's tourism ministry rebranded Valentine's Day as "National Chocolate Day" to highlight its status as a top cocoa exporter.
Celebrations blend Western customs like red attire and gifts with chocolate feasts, museum visits, and themed meals.
Estonia: Friend's Day
In Estonia, February 14 is Sõbrapäev, or "Friend's Day," honoring platonic bonds. Friends and family exchange gifts to include everyone, single or coupled.
Romantic elements persist, with engagements, weddings, and singles' events like the "love bus."
