Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon: Iceland's Stunning Iceberg Paradise – Complete Travel Guide
Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, Iceland
Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon in Iceland mesmerizes with its jagged icebergs in shades of blue and black, drifting with the tide. As an experienced traveler, here are my essential tips for visiting this iconic natural wonder.
Jökulsárlón is Iceland’s deepest and largest glacial lake, captivating tourists, photographers, adventurers, and even Hollywood filmmakers like James Bond.
Over the past century, retreating Breiðamerkurjökull glacier—due to rising global temperatures since around 1920—has carved out this dramatic landscape. The name Jökulsárlón means “glacial river lagoon” in Icelandic.
Located within Vatnajökull National Park, it has become one of Iceland’s top attractions.
Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon Travel Guide
The Icebergs at Jökulsárlón
In under a century, this once-solid ice sheet has transformed into a lagoon of shattered icebergs and deep waters.
A glacial river now connects it to the ocean, carrying icebergs to the North Atlantic and depositing surreal shapes on the black-sand Diamond Beach.
Each year, new icebergs calve from Vatnajökull, drift through the lagoon, and exit to sea during summer. The lagoon doubled in size from 1975 to 1998 and now spans about 7 square miles, continuing to expand.
Iceland at Its Most Beautiful
A photographer’s dream, Jökulsárlón offered unforgettable sights during my November visit. The compressed glacial ice glows with luminous blue hues, especially when icebergs flip.
The vivid contrast of blue ice against the distant white glacier and black sands creates an otherworldly scene. Seals often appear, hunting fish where the river meets the sea, alongside flocks of seabirds.
Glacier Lagoon Boat Trips
Glacier Lagoon tours have operated for nearly 30 years, popularized after featuring in the James Bond film A View to a Kill (1985) as a Siberian stand-in.
Choose from amphibious boat tours (approx. ISK 5,500 / $55 USD) for relaxed iceberg viewing with narration, or thrilling Zodiac RIB adventures (approx. ISK 9,500 / $95 USD) for close-up encounters, including under the glacier face when safe.
Best Time to Visit Jökulsárlón
Boat tours run May to October; outside this, harsh weather prevails—always prepare for storms. July and August offer the best weather for photography, but September and October provide fewer crowds, lower prices, and northern lights viewing.
Getting to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon
Just off the Ring Road (Route 1), it’s a 4-5 hour drive from Reykjavík. Plan an overnight for the full experience.
Rental Car
Discover Cars compares major providers for the best deals—ideal for Iceland’s remote sites. I rented a campervan to save on lodging, but note Iceland’s 2015 rules: overnight stays require designated campgrounds only.
The drive from Reykjavík tempts frequent stops amid Iceland’s scenery.
By Bus
Strætó Route 51 from Reykjavík’s Mjódd terminal to Jökulsárlón (6 hours, departs 1pm; return next day ~12:55pm). Limited options mean overnight planning is essential; no lodging at the site.

Common and safe in Iceland, though time varies with luck and stops.
Guided Glacier Lagoon Tours
Organized day tours from Reykjavík visit Jökulsárlón—perfect for hassle-free travel.

Jökulsárlón Travel Tips
- Summer warmth contrasts with chilling iceberg breezes—pack hat and gloves regardless of sun.
- Beware territorial skua birds; they dive-bomb near nests.
- Photograph at sunrise for optimal light and fewer crowds; sunset works but busier.
- Limited seasonal café for snacks only.
- Nearby ice caves (winter only) are a must with a guide.
No Iceland trip is complete without Jökulsárlón—its allure is undeniable! ★
