Top 7 Reasons to Take a Sabbatical from Work and Travel the World

Taking a sabbatical from work, whether for a few months or years, can profoundly boost your personal growth and well-being.

In 2010, my partner Scott and I took 6 weeks off to explore Southeast Asia and Australia's east coast—an unforgettable journey. Six years ago, I completed a 2-month sabbatical that played a pivotal role in shaping my current self. Drawing from these experiences, here are compelling reasons why sabbaticals are transformative, hopefully inspiring you to plan your own.

Meet New People

In a traditional 9-5 job, finding time and energy to connect with others can be challenging. Bars might have worked in your twenties, but post-30, they're often unappealing. During our 6-week trip, Scott and I connected with like-minded travelers in Australia and Southeast Asia—people sharing our interests, unlike our routine life in San Diego. We formed lasting friendships and stay in touch today.

Learn New Skills

A sabbatical offers ample time to acquire new abilities. Dreaming of a new language? Scott and I are honing our Spanish; though not on our last trip (no Spanish-speaking countries), we plan to immerse ourselves in South America in 2012. In Australia, I improved my surfing dramatically—surfing twice daily versus occasional sessions at home in San Diego accelerates progress.

Pursue Other Interests (Discover Your Passion)

Full-time work often crowds out beloved hobbies. Before our 2010 trip, I sidelined photography and writing as mere pastimes. The extended break revealed my deep passion for them, prompting a career shift toward what I love. Experimenting with travel jobs can uncover passions while earning income.

Rejuvenate

A sabbatical provides essential rest for body and mind. At home, slowing down is tough amid endless tasks. Travel shifts priorities, highlighting health and relationships as true essentials.

Learn About Yourself & Gain Confidence

Free from daily distractions, sabbaticals allow deep self-reflection amid constant personal evolution. Facing the fear of unpaid time off builds resilience, taking you out of your comfort zone to reveal inner strengths and boost confidence.

Experience the World

Extended travel immerses you in diverse cultures, broadening perspectives. It counters tunnel vision, putting personal challenges in global context and fostering gratitude for your life.

Enjoy Life While You Still Have Your Youth

Don't hoard savings for retirement—enjoy hard-earned money now, while healthy. Too many delay dreams until 65, only to face health setbacks. Embrace a 'mini-retirement' today and seize the moment.
