Bar di Turrisi: Sicily's Iconic Fertility Bar in Castelmola

Years ago, while solo traveling in Taormina, Sicily, I met an Italian local who invited me to dinner. Though not a romantic interest, the offer of a meal with a new friend was a delightful break from my adventures. Little did I know, an even bigger surprise awaited.

We headed to Castelmola, a picturesque village overlooking Taormina, and arrived at Bar di Turrisi—a historic three-story restaurant and bar established in 1947, lovingly passed down through generations.

Inside, the dim lighting set a cozy ambiance amid a crowd of locals savoring their meals. My host chatted with staff in Sicilian, and soon we ascended a winding staircase to a rooftop table with breathtaking views of the coast and Mount Etna.

As we passed through, I couldn't miss the extraordinary decor: phallic symbols in every size, shape, and color adorned countertops, railings, chairs, walls, and even menus. The bathrooms feature faucets shaped like male anatomy.

This isn't mere eccentricity—the phallic motifs symbolize fertility. As the owner explains, after fathering three sons in five years, "there was one particular symbol that could represent it all."

After snapping photos to share this quirky Sicilian spot, indulge in the local almond wine specialty and savor their excellent pasta dishes.

Castelmola remains off the typical tourist path, making a visit here a rare and memorable experience for non-locals.
