Oia vs. Imerovigli: Where to Stay in Santorini for Unforgettable Caldera Views
Selecting the ideal place to stay in Santorini presents a common dilemma for travelers. Drawing from my firsthand experience staying in both Oia and Imerovigli, this guide outlines key differences to help you decide.
Santorini, a stunning Greek island in the Cyclades group within the Aegean Sea, spans about 28 square miles and supports a population of around 15,000 across towns like Fira, Imerovigli, Oia, Emporio, Pyrgos, and Perissa.
Having resided in both Imerovigli and Oia—two of Santorini's most iconic caldera-rim villages—I can attest to their unique charms. Oia sits at the northwestern tip, while Imerovigli lies just south across a small bay. Though both offer historic allure and breathtaking views, their atmospheres differ markedly. Personally, Imerovigli emerged as my favorite, but the choice depends on your priorities.

Imerovigli
Situated just 2 kilometers from Fira, the island's capital, Imerovigli provides a serene retreat with only about 500 residents. Perched at the caldera's highest, most central point, it delivers unparalleled vistas of the Aegean Sea.
During my stay, I chose Iconic Santorini, an exquisite boutique cave hotel ideal for romantic escapes. Carved into the hillside like many local structures, it offers a tranquil, inviting ambiance.

Pros of Staying in Imerovigli
Central Location for Easy Island Exploration
Imerovigli's prime position facilitates access to both sides of the island. It's perfect for day hikes or renting ATVs and scooters for broader adventures.
Exceptional Caldera Views
Imerovigli boasts the island's most dramatic caldera panoramas and top photography spots. Its elevated, west-facing position makes it a premier sunset viewing location—my personal top pick.

Serene and Relaxing Atmosphere
Unlike the lively Oia, Imerovigli offers quiet respite amid abundant sights and activities. Iconic Santorini, cliffside perched, feels secluded despite nearby hotels. Private outdoor spaces feature stunning breakfasts, with most rooms including plunge pools—mine had an indoor cave pool for ultimate indulgence.

Iconic prioritizes underbooking to ensure a private feel, which enhanced my experience immensely.

Ideal for Couples
The laid-back vibe suits romantic getaways: leisurely town walks, scenic hikes, wine tasting, and spa indulgences.
Authentic Greek Hospitality
With fewer tourists, Imerovigli showcases warmer Greek hospitality. Meals at Iconic Santorini felt like home-cooked feasts, with staff attending to every detail.

Cons of Staying in Imerovigli
Fewer Entertainment Choices
The tranquility means limited local performances and nightlife, though vibrant Fira is nearby.
Less Social Scene
Meeting fellow travelers is easier in busier Oia; Imerovigli prioritizes peace over outgoing interactions.
Oia
Oia graces Santorini's northwestern caldera edge, renowned for its blue-and-white architecture cascading down steep hillsides via narrow paths.
As a major tourist hub, Oia buzzes during peak and shoulder seasons. While enchanting, the crowds somewhat diminished my enjoyment—consider timing your visit accordingly.

Pros of Staying in Oia
Abundant Shops and Dining
Oia excels in variety, from diverse cuisines to shopping opportunities.
Wide Range of Accommodations
Options abound, from boutique hotels to B&Bs, though prices run higher—budget stays may require venturing just outside town.
Iconic Photo Opportunities
Oia's postcard scenes, like Oia Castle at sunset and the three blue domes, define Santorini imagery.

Vibrant Nightlife
Oia rivals Fira for evenings out, offering romantic bars and lively spots.

Cons of Staying in Oia
Crowds and Congestion
Tourist throngs can overwhelm, detracting from the beauty—opt for off-season to avoid peak chaos.
Higher Costs
Popularity drives up prices compared to Imerovigli, though savvy budgeting is possible.
