6 Surprising Reasons Why Norway is the World's Happiest Country

Less than 24 hours before embarking on my two-week journey through Scandinavia, the annual World Happiness Report was released. Amid last-minute packing and excursion planning, I paused to review the results. Denmark, the three-time winner, had relinquished the No. 1 spot to Norway, which surged three places to claim top honors in 2017. The study evaluated six key factors influencing happiness, from health to generosity.

These evidence-based factors undoubtedly contribute to national well-being. However, during my travels, I discovered six "unofficial" reasons that may also explain why Norwegians are among the happiest people on Earth.

  1. Impeccable cleanliness everywhere: From Oslo's spotless airport—where floors are pristine enough to eat off—to immaculate city streets and public transport, Norway's hygiene standards are exceptional.
  2. Northern Lights as an everyday spectacle: For residents above the Arctic Circle, the Aurora Borealis is routine, unlike the bucket-list dream for global tourists chasing its mesmerizing green dances across midnight skies.
  3. Stunning fjords year-round: Cruise dramatic fjords in summer or snowmobile across frozen ones in winter. I was amazed to learn we were gliding over a frozen lake amid towering mountains and bright white powder.
  4. Real polar bears and Arctic wildlife: Trek to Svalbard for wild polar bears, dog sled with huskies, or spot humpback and orca whales breaching in Tromsø during winter—experiences that feel straight out of a dream.
  5. Perfectly crisp, cold beer: Brewed with pristine Arctic water, Norwegian beer is refreshingly frosty. Bonus: The world's northernmost brewery, Macks Ølbryggeri, is right there.
  6. World-class artistic heritage: Home to Edvard Munch's iconic "The Scream" and Henrik Ibsen's masterpieces like "A Doll's House," Oslo boasts dedicated museums. From Viking ships to contemporary art, cultural treasures abound.

  • Exploring the Remote Wakhan Corridor: A Solo Trek Through Afghanistan’s Northern Frontier

I wake for breakfast as I had any other morning this past week, but today I am dining alone, here in the small frontier village of Eshkashem in north-eastern Afghanistan. At the conclusion of my tour of central Asia by foot and 40 year old Soviet motorcycle – a Ural – last summer, I resolved to trek Afghanistan’s Wakhan corridor. It would provide a fitting climax to my travels before committing myself to another claustrophobic cubicle in a soulless office. For two weeks I have walked, eaten a

MYKONOS EXPERIENCEThe Island of the winds through my eyes I caught my first glimpse of Mykonos when I was 7 years old, as my godfather was working at the airforce unit in the settlement of Ano Mera. Summer memories flood my mind…Daily swim in the clear blue waters of Merchia beach, Sunday visit at the Monastery of the Virgin Mary of Tourliani, daily play in the square of Ano Mera with local children, family food in the traditional tavern of Mathios in Tourlos and endless walks in the stone-built
