We packed our gear with bleary eyes, bracing for the 10-mile descent into the Havasupai canyon. Fortunately, we opted for a mule to haul our heavy packs—carrying camping equipment and supplies over that distance would have been grueling.
Our destination: Havasu Falls, a stunning turquoise oasis in a remote section of the Grand Canyon. 'Havasupai' translates to 'people of the blue-green waters,' and those waters live up to their legendary hue.

Closest Airport: Las Vegas (LAS) is approximately 4 hours away
Pack mules require advance reservations (at least one week).
Initially, we hiked with our packs but sought a last-minute mule rental. Our bags reached the lodge (8 miles in), but delivery to the campground (2 more miles) wasn't guaranteed without prior booking. We waited anxiously for hours without essentials. Note: Recent reports indicate pack mules are poorly maintained—now we recommend backpacking your gear like any multi-day trek.
Secure camping or lodge reservations on February 1st.
Book online via the official site. In 2018, the full year sold out in minutes at 8 AM. No day hikes allowed—reservations are mandatory.
Spend the first night at Hualapai Hilltop (car camping or tent) for an early start.
For summer/fall hikes, start at dawn to avoid heat and ensure ample break time in the shade.
For helicopter out (skipping the final 8 miles), arrive by 7 AM.
Late arrivals may wait until afternoon.
Getting to Havasu Falls
Havasu Falls, Navajo Falls, and Mooney Falls lie on Arizona's Grand Canyon South Rim within the Havasupai Indian Reservation. The trailhead is Hualapai Hilltop parking lot—ideal for overnighting before hiking.
Access via Indian Road 18, 65 miles north of Route 66. Watch for cattle and wildlife, especially at night—we stopped multiple times.
