Travelzoo Survey: Travelers Divided Between Social Media FOMO and the Urge to Disconnect

If you didn't post it on social media, did it even happen? Travelzoo's Fall Travel Trends Survey* reveals travelers grappling with FOMO (fear of missing out) and a craving for digital detox, torn between sharing vacation highlights online and truly unplugging.

Drive for Unique and Adventurous Experiences

FOMO is reshaping travel choices: 53% of respondents feel pressure to book unique or exotic trips, while 40% seek more adventurous ones. Adventure is rising, with 1 in 6 pushing beyond their comfort zones and 34% viewing vacations without thrills as wasted. Younger travelers feel this most acutely—24% of millennials and 29% of Gen Xers regret not doing enough at their destination.

This quest for excitement ties directly to social media appeal. Nearly half (47%) say platforms heighten the need for more experiences, and 30% book trips based on Instagram-worthy potential.

The Rise of Digital Disconnect

Yet, despite the urge to showcase perfect vacations, half of travelers find digital-free trips more appealing. Reasons include excessive email checks (28%), news fatigue (27%), and phone dependency (22%). Amid daily stresses, top priorities remain relaxation (56%) and great food (44%).

Prioritizing Meaningful Experiences

Across ages, 44% prioritize original, meaningful trips. A quarter seek spiritual growth or personal development—highest among Gen Z (58%) and millennials (39%), versus baby boomers (18%) and pre-1946 (28%). 10% contribute to local communities, led by millennials over boomers (2%).

"Newsfeeds brimming with envy-inducing photos explain why travelers waver between posting Instagrammable moments and escaping it all," says Mike Stitt, Travelzoo's President of North America. "Focus on real memories—like tasting truffles before tweeting!"
