The 5 Stages of Solo Travel: A Firsthand Journey from Doubt to Empowerment in Greece
Solo travel is transformative, and I strongly encourage everyone to try it. As a travel industry professional and pragmatist, I acknowledge its ups and downs, much like any rewarding pursuit.
I'm Amanda, a 28-year-old from New York—independent, career-driven, self-sufficient, and guided by a mindset of proactive change and resilience.
With an insatiable passion for globetrotting, funded by my passive income and career, I take about four trips annually. Until recently, I always traveled with companions—friends, family, or colleagues—prioritizing companionship over solo exploration.
I admired others' solo stories but never imagined myself in that position. That changed this year: After a breakup, my prepaid dream trip to Greece loomed, with no one available to join. Despite initial hesitation, I embraced the challenge of traveling alone.
Stage 1: Denial
“I'm fine.” “Everything will be fine.” These were my responses to inquiries. In reality, I felt terrified, bitter, and uncertain. Having traveled extensively, foreign destinations weren't the issue—it was the prospect of profound loneliness. Fears swirled: What if I don't meet anyone? What if I dine alone every meal? Insecurities resurfaced.
Stage 2: Realization Sets In
Landing in Athens alone triggered panic. I navigated to the city center and my hostel, City Circus (highly recommended). Booking a shared dorm for the first time brought concerns about safety, etiquette, and awkward introductions. My mindset was pessimistic.
Tip No. 1: Stay positive. Openness leads to rewarding experiences.
Stage 3: Gaining Confidence
Embracing positivity shifted everything. City Circus's nightly happy hours fostered connections among solo travelers. Over wine and hummus, we shared stories, easing my doubts and boosting my readiness.
Stage 4: Questioning the Decision
Challenges arose: An ATV breakdown on a Mykonos dirt road, getting lost without GPS, and a waiter's remark while dining solo (“You are strange”). My Airbnb, surrounded by couples, amplified isolation.
Stage 5: Embracing Triumph
These hurdles built resilience. I explored pristine beaches, savored Greek cuisine with sunset views, initiated conversations everywhere, and relished Santorini's solitude—cobblestone walks, espresso, and Oia sunsets with local wine.
Though scary and lonely at times, this trip was profoundly rewarding. I returned more confident, humble, and mature—ready to travel solo or with company.
