Epic Road Trips in Chile's Sur Chico: Scenic Drives Through Lakes and Volcanoes

While driving in parts of South America can raise safety concerns—such as avoiding Venezuela's roads or remote scenic spots—Chile stands out as an exceptional destination for self-drive adventures. Its 1,494km stretch of the Pan-American Highway (Route 5) from La Serena to Puerto Montt rivals top freeways in North America and Europe. In Sur Chico, spanning the Los Lagos, La Araucanía, and Los Ríos regions, well-maintained roads (with ongoing paving improvements) unlock stunning national parks dotted with volcanoes, turquoise lakes, and picturesque lakeside villages.

Los Lagos (Lakes District) - 240km

Los Lagos offers the most accessible and scenic drives in Sur Chico, with pristine roads revealing one breathtaking vista after another. Most travelers arrive in Puerto Montt via plane, road, or ferry—a practical hub for renting a car, but little else. Drive north to Puerto Varas, one of Chile's most charming towns, featuring German-style architecture and a dramatic lakeside position on vast Lago Llanquihue (860 sq km, Chile's second-largest lake). A newly paved road from Ensenada to Las Cascadas lets you circle the lake completely, passing idyllic spots like Puerto Octay, Frutillar, and volcanic black-sand beaches. Marvel at the iconic, perfectly conical, snow-capped Volcán Osorno, and detour from Ensenada to Centro de Ski y Montaña Volcán Osorno in Parque Nacional Vicente Pérez Rosales. Ascending the volcano offers panoramic views of Osorno, Volcán Calbuco, and Lago Llanquihue below—accessible mainly by private vehicle, as public transport is limited beyond tours.

La Araucanía - 400km

Rent a 4WD in Temuco for the rugged paths of Parque Nacional Conguillío, entering from the south at Melipeuco via a solid gravel road. This premier park showcases Volcán Llaima's dramatic grey-brown lava flows (last eruption: 2008), creating lunar-like landscapes amid native forests—especially vivid in late April's autumn foliage. Established in 1950 to protect Araucaria (monkey puzzle) trees across 608 sq km of alpine lakes, canyons, and woodlands, it's among Chile's finest. Exit north to Curacautín, then head east to Lonquimay, where alpine roads border Tolhuaca and Malacahuello-Nalcas national parks, framed by Volcán Tolhuaca and Lonquimay. Stay at Swiss-Chilean Suizandina or German-run Andenrose for hiking access. Once sated on volcanoes, return west to Route 5 and Temuco.

Los Ríos – 300km

Pick up a car in Osorno, just across the Los Lagos border, and head to Lago Ranco—a lesser-known but strikingly beautiful sapphire lake ringed by lush mountains and emerald islands. Loop around via Futrono and Lago Ranco for epic views, noting a manual barge crossing at Puerto Lapi over Río Bueno and rough dirt roads on the east side. After exploring its serene corners, drive north on Route 5 to Valdivia, a Pacific Coast gem rich in German heritage and craft beer. Home to top microbreweries like Kunstmann, it's ideal for parking and sampling.
