Petrópolis and Teresópolis: Rio de Janeiro's Premier Mountain Escapes
Rio de Janeiro's summer heat often exceeds 40°C (104°F), drawing locals and visitors to crowded beaches and forest waterfalls. To avoid the throngs, head north to the refreshing hills of the Serrana region, where cooler temperatures and breathtaking scenery await.
This historic area reflects the legacy of 19th-century German settlers, offering attractions like the imperial cities of Petrópolis and Teresópolis, plus a magnificent national park.
Situated 70km north of Rio de Janeiro at 838m (2,749 ft) elevation, Petrópolis was commissioned by Emperor Dom Pedro II in 1845 and named after him (from Latin Petrus and Greek Polis, meaning Pedro's city). Designed by German engineer Júlio Frederico Koeler, it attracted German immigrants whose influence lingers in architecture, street names, and cuisine.
Just 20km northeast across Serra dos Órgãos National Park, Teresópolis—named for Empress Teresa Cristina—is smaller, with a milder climate and relaxed atmosphere.
While adventures abound, locals recommend unwinding with fine food, company, and views. Abundant guesthouses and rentals in scenic spots make this ideal. Buses connect from Rio's main terminal, but renting a car offers the best exploration.
Serra dos Órgãos National Park
Spanning 105 sq km (40 sq miles) between the cities, PARNASO boasts lush forests and jagged peaks like Dedo de Deus (God's Finger) and Agulha do Diabo (Devil's Needle).
Over 200km of trails cater to all levels: easy paths to waterfalls like the 1.3km Trilha Suspensa (Suspended Trail), multi-day treks such as the Petrópolis-Teresópolis Crossing, or rock climbing on Dedo de Deus. Non-climbers can enjoy panoramic views from Mirante do Soberbo near Teresópolis.
Well-managed with visitor centers, marked trails, and inclusive accommodations, entry costs R$52 (about US$14), camping R$10 (US$2.50), and dorm beds R$39 (US$10).
Imperial Museum in Petrópolis: A Dive into Brazil's Royal Past
Housed in Dom Pedro II's 1862 neoclassical summer palace, this museum features over 300,000 imperial artifacts, including crown jewels and the quill that signed slavery's abolition in 1888. Surrounded by lush gardens, it requires protective slippers for tours—a fun twist for kids. An English/Portuguese app aids navigation.
Savor Local Brews
German heritage fuels top breweries. Petrópolis's Bohemia Brewery, founded in 1853, offers English-guided tours, interactive museum exhibits, and tastings in its bar.
In Teresópolis, Vila St. Gallen's Therezópolis beers pair with cheeses on Portuguese tours—bring a translator for the full experience.
Festive Highlights
Petrópolis's annual Bauernfest (late June, Crystal Palace) celebrates German roots with oompah bands, beer, glühwein, and sausages. Year-round, Casa do Alemão serves classics.
Teresópolis's Feirarte weekend market (Sat-Sun, 10am-6pm) features 600+ stalls of local crafts, drawing 5,000 visitors.
