MEDIA RELEASE
STATE COLLEGE, PA — The State College NAACP is hosting the area's first Juneteenth commemoration with in-person and online events.
Chapter President Lorraine Jones, who helped establish the local branch in January, expressed enthusiasm: “Right now, the African American community is hurting. We need something positive to reflect on and give us hope. Juneteenth is a timely reminder of our heritage and resilience; like our ancestors, we must endure the struggle knowing joy comes in the morning.”
The event features prayers, speeches, musical performances, and art, starting at noon at Martin Luther King, Jr. Plaza in downtown State College and streaming live online at strategiesjustice.com/juneteenth. Live stream here.
Attendees at the in-person event are asked to respect personal space, follow social distancing guidelines, and wear face masks. The event will also be live-streamed.
Juneteenth marks the 1865 emancipation of the last enslaved African Americans in the Confederacy. While widely celebrated elsewhere, this is Central Pennsylvania's first official observance. In 2020, Governor Tom Wolf signed Act 9, designating June 19 as “Juneteenth National Freedom Day” in Pennsylvania.
The NAACP's mission is to ensure political, educational, social, and economic equality, eliminating race-based discrimination and promoting well-being for all.
