Modern Barn Honors Historic Design
Owners Michael and Torie Houseknecht drew from Pennsylvania's barn heritage to create this stunning 10,000-square-foot bank barn on West Gatesburg Road, completed in 2018 after two years of meticulous construction.
After the original 1800s barn burned in 2016, Michael went beyond replacement. Inspired by barns encountered on statewide travels, the couple incorporated standout features into the new design. As an industrial engineer, Michael analyzed historic barn durability to ensure the structure could support the 4,100-pound center cupola and its 3-foot eagle weathervane. He felled nearly 300 ash, white oak, and hemlock trees on-site, skidding and milling the lumber himself. Stained-glass windows from historic churches and an antique painted wooden door adorn the ground level. The result is a seamless blend of tradition and craftsmanship that feels timeless.

Iconic Red Barns
Red barns epitomize Americana. This vibrant hue traces back to the early 1700s, when New England settlers used a skim milk, lime, and red iron oxide mixture to protect wood affordably. The dark color also retained winter heat better than bare timber. Chemical paints later sustained its popularity. Happy Valley boasts striking red barns among its historic collection.
Happy Valley's most iconic barn, the Neff Round Barn in Potter Township, stands out. Per the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission, round barns stemmed from reform movements touting cost savings and efficiency, though they proved challenging to build and use. Few survive, making this a rare gem.
The Neff Barn drew attention from DIY Network's Barnwood Builders, featured in a fall 2020 episode.
"Pennsylvania's history is etched in its barns. Our Happy Valley visit was unforgettable," said host Mark Bowe. "I've seen bank and round barns, but the Neff is the first round bank barn—a true original. I restore antique structures, but I hope the Neff and Hodge Barns endure here for generations."
Windermere Farms in Spring Mills is renowned for breeding champion Percherons, but its bold red barn against Brush Valley's hillside steals the show along Route 192.
Founded in 1962 by Abraham and Mary Allebach as a dairy farm, it soon expanded into Percherons, gaining worldwide acclaim. Family generations continue the legacy. The farm also produces Windermere Natural Soaps in the former milk house, using homegrown herbs and wild plants for over 45 varieties of soaps, lotions, and balms.
Nearby, a picturesque wood-and-stone hay barn awaits historical research with a local expert.

Banked and Beautiful
Now an Amish dairy farm in Spring Mills' Penns Valley, the Hodge Barn (c. 1832) is a rare three-level bank barn with exquisite detailing.
Restored for the Arts
Happy Valley barns also foster the arts. At the Columbus Chapel & Boal Mansion Museum, the Nittany Theatre at the Barn is America's longest-running community theater in a bank barn. British actress Lillian Major, star of 1937's Accused with Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and later State College resident, oversaw its restoration as the museum's first curator. She performed in its debut production and many more.
