Axemann Brewery: A Spacious, COVID-Safe Taproom in Bellefonte

Axemann Brewery: A Spacious, COVID-Safe Taproom in Bellefonte

Axemann Brewery launched its taproom amid the COVID-19 pandemic, inheriting a business model perfectly suited to social distancing from day one. With no pre-pandemic operations to pivot from, the brewery is poised for growth in a vast, safety-focused space.

Nestled in the 20,000-square-foot former Cerro Metal Factory at Titan Energy Park in Bellefonte, the taproom offers ample room for guests. "We're in a massive industrial facility, giving us plenty of space," says founder Rod Stahl. "We can seat guests with distances often exceeding six feet—up to eight or 10 feet between tables."

Generous outdoor areas provide additional seating, while large garage-style doors along one wall enhance airflow. Towering industrial ceilings further bolster the venue's natural safety features.

Though originally envisioned for a more social atmosphere, the taproom now offers table-side drink service from staff. Patrons order from The Blonde Bistro via phone for seamless, contactless food delivery—all backed by pre-shift COVID-19 health screenings for employees.

This setup delivers a reassuringly normal dining and drinking experience in a secure environment.

"We've created something truly special that evolved during construction," Stahl notes. "People are often surprised: 'We had no idea this was here.' The exterior is an unassuming old factory, but inside it's a unique destination unlike anything else nearby."

Beyond the taproom, Axemann is a full production brewery, canning beers and supplying kegs to local shops, restaurants, and bars. With dining restrictions, the focus has shifted to canning and case sales. Fans can support by requesting Axemann beers at six-pack shops, convenience stores, Sheetz, Rutter's, and more.

"That's the best way to back us if you're avoiding public outings," Stahl adds.

Axemann gives back too, hosting events for local causes like Penn State's THON and winter drives for mittens, gloves, and hats.

Looking to 2021, happy hour specials are on deck, alongside a rotating small-batch series featuring exclusive pilot brews.
