Harvest Fields Community Trails: Mountain Biking Fun for All Ages in Happy Valley
The scenic mountains framing Happy Valley's horizon offer endless opportunities for families to create lasting memories. From hiking and biking to fishing and hunting, Central Pennsylvania's outdoors has something for everyone.
One of the newest additions to Happy Valley's outdoor attractions is the Harvest Fields Community Trails (HFCT), which opened in October 2020. This family-friendly destination is perfect for riders of all ages to discover the joys of mountain biking.
"The Harvest Fields Community Trail system helps beginners of all ages build skills and confidence before tackling the more technical trails in Rothrock State Forest," says Perry Schram, President of the Nittany Mountain Biking Association (NMBA). "Designed and built by industry professionals for beginner to intermediate riders, these machine-built trails suit all ages. They offer beginners a safe start while allowing intermediate and advanced riders to hone their handling skills."
For years, the NMBA sought a dedicated space for aspiring mountain bikers. HFCT fulfilled that vision, seeing heavy use since opening.
NMBA is now fundraising for Phase II, which will add a skills-building area with features of increasing difficulty. This will prepare riders for the 100+ miles of challenging trails in nearby Rothrock and Bald Eagle State Forests. Construction is slated to begin in spring 2022.
Beyond HFCT, Happy Valley boasts trails for all skill levels—earning State College the title of Pennsylvania's Mountain Bike Capital from Singletracks. Rothrock State Forest offers over 100 miles, including the scenic Tussey Mountain Ridge and the acclaimed 26.7-mile Cooper’s Gap trail, among dozens more for locals and visitors alike.
Tips to Get Started
Start with the right bike from local experts at shops like The Bicycle Shop or Freeze Thaw Cycles, who ensure proper fit for your adventures. Build endurance and confidence gradually.
"HFCT trails are ideal for beginners, and Rothrock's gravel roads offer endurance-building rides with stunning views," advises Schram. "Grab a Purple Lizard map from a local shop for all gravel roads and trails."
Adults 18+ can join NMBA's weekly rides or trail work days to maintain HFCT and Rothrock trails.
The Centre County Crows youth team (grades 6-12, ages 11-18) provides certified coaching in a fun, safe environment to build competent, confident young bikers.
