Why Orlando Thrives as a Destination for All Ages

Discover why Orlando is the ideal travel destination for both children and adults.

Meet Helen Wright, a British travel and lifestyle journalist for PassportStamps.UK and former contributor to National Geographic Traveler, Daily Mail, and Marie Claire. She proudly calls herself a "theme park girl" due to her passion for Orlando’s attractions. Wright recently explored the city with her partner Simon and their toddler Finn, uncovering hidden gems beyond the famed theme parks.

"It goes without saying there is a lot to do in Orlando," says Wright. "We couldn’t believe the variety of attractions and activities available for families and for adults without kids alike."

Watch Wright’s full report in her video and read on for an insider’s guide to why Orlando is perfect for travelers of all ages. (See more of her videos on YouTube.)

Orlando’s Natural Beauty

While Orlando’s theme parks are world‑renowned, the city offers a wealth of state parks, natural springs, and trails that showcase its native beauty. Wright and her family began their outdoor adventure by renting bicycles from West Orange Trail Bikes & Blades Co. in Winter Garden, a 25‑minute drive from Walt Disney World®. The 22‑mile paved trail features kids’ play areas and plenty of amenities, and the company even provides child bike trailers for toddler‑friendly rides.

Wright also recommends boats as a unique way to explore Orlando’s scenery. The Winter Park Scenic Boat Tour, just 20 minutes north of downtown, offers a relaxing glimpse of the area’s waterways. For a faster, equally scenic experience, try Wild Florida or other local airboat operators.

Stroll‑Worthy Orlando Neighborhoods

Historic Winter Garden is a favorite for visitors of all ages. Its centerpiece, Plant Street Market, is a hip food hall with independent shops, craft beer, and creative culinary offerings—perfect after a bike ride on the West Orange Trail. Wright notes that Winter Garden represents a vibrant, modern side of Florida often overlooked in typical Orlando itineraries.

Winter Park itself is another charming neighborhood worth exploring. Stroll the tree‑lined blocks of Park Avenue, home to more than 140 boutiques and restaurants, including award‑winning eateries like The Ravenous Pig and Prato, led by James Beard‑nominated chefs.

Other walkable neighborhoods such as College Park, Ivanhoe Village, and Thornton Park—located near downtown—offer additional dining, shopping, and cultural experiences.

Hands‑On Orlando Attractions for Kids

"For Finn, we wanted a place that would keep him entertained," Wright says. "Orlando offers no shortage of family‑friendly options."

Standalone attractions like the Crayola Experience (26 interactive activities at The Florida Mall) let kids unleash their creativity. The Orlando Science Center, with four floors of exhibits near downtown, and WonderWorks at Pointe Orlando, an upside‑down museum with 100+ interactive displays, provide engaging learning experiences. For marine life enthusiasts, the SEA LIFE Orlando Aquarium at ICON Park showcases over 5,000 creatures and hands‑on rockpools.

Orlando Nightlife, Shopping & More for Adults

Beyond family fun, Orlando offers vibrant experiences for adults traveling solo or with partners. Wright’s favorite adult‑oriented stops include a wine tasting at The Wine Room in Winter Park and Quantum Leap Winery near downtown.

The Wheel at ICON Park—a 400‑foot observation wheel—provides breathtaking views of downtown, theme parks, lakes, and surrounding landscapes. Shopping at The Florida Mall and dining throughout the city add further variety to an adult itinerary.

Wright’s favorite takeaway: "Getting to spend quality time with my family in a place where thrills are guaranteed and memories are made is the ultimate Orlando experience."
