Chilling Ghost Stories and Haunted Legends of Myrtle Beach

Chilling Ghost Stories and Haunted Legends of Myrtle Beach

With Friday the 13th upon us, dive into these eerie tales from Myrtle Beach—stories of misfortune, spirits, and the supernatural passed down through generations of storytellers.

The poignant ghost of Alice Flagg dates back to the mid-1800s. She fell deeply in love with a lumberman, but her brother disapproved due to his modest economic status. Undeterred, Alice secretly accepted his proposal. Tragically, she succumbed to malaria, and her brother discovered the engagement ring hidden around her neck. Enraged, he hurled it into the marsh. Legend persists that Alice's spirit wanders All Saints Parish Cemetery in Murrells Inlet, searching for her lost ring. Her family home, The Hermitage, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

On Pawleys Island, the Gray Man appears as a harbinger of severe storms or hurricanes. In the early 1800s, this soldier was en route to marry his fiancée when he and his horse perished in the marsh's treacherous pluff mud. His apparition has protected coastal residents since its first sighting in 1893.

Drunken Jack, a notorious pirate in these waters, was abandoned by his crew on a Murrells Inlet island with only rum for sustenance. Unable to survive on spirits alone, his ghost roams the inlet in search of more rum—or perhaps food. The beloved MarshWalk seafood spot, Drunken Jack’s, honors this spectral buccaneer.

In Little River, The Brentwood Restaurant and Wine Bistro serves delectable cuisine alongside paranormal encounters. Since opening in 2007, owners report objects moving unaided, wine glasses shattering mysteriously, and apparitions in upstairs windows. The 1910-built house once housed local fishermen as a boarding house, likely fueling its hauntings. Notably, relocating a photo from the men's restroom escalated disturbances until it was returned—seeming to placate the spirits.

These tales add thrill to Myrtle Beach's allure, blending adventure, history, and a touch of the supernatural. It's an ideal destination for ghost enthusiasts.
