Unlock the Health Benefits of Hatteras Sea Salt: Pure, Nutrient-Rich, and Sustainably Crafted

At Hatteras Saltworks, we live by the principle: "Pure, nutrient-rich waters make pure, nutrient-rich ocean salt." Our entire process unfolds on Hatteras Island, NC—renowned for its extreme weather and pristine environment. Embracing island resourcefulness, we reuse materials whenever possible and minimize electricity use at our solar oven farm.

Our solar oven farm sits 30 miles off the North Carolina coast in Buxton. We source water from the rare convergence of the Gulf Stream and Labrador Current in the northwest Sargasso Sea—just off Hatteras. This unique phenomenon delivers abundant fishing, world-class surf, and the cleanest, most nutrient-dense waters along the Eastern Seaboard. Far from major cities and with minimal population, Hatteras enjoys negligible human runoff. We're proud to hand-harvest and solar-evaporate our sea salt entirely on Hatteras Island, NC.

Hatteras Island's fierce weather demanded innovative, resilient solar ovens to endure hurricanes and Nor'easters. Through rigorous trial and error, we designed durable structures using local Outer Banks materials. In full sunlight, these ovens reach about 180°F, slowly evaporating seawater over 30-45 days. We never boil the water, preserving its vital minerals.

Our meticulous process begins at the Avon Fishing Pier during high tide near the full moon. We transport the water to our farm, filter it, and evaporate it in solar ovens. Once crystallized, we hand-select the sea salt in our NCDA-approved packaging facility, break down clumps, and final-dry in solar ovens. Each pouch is hand-stamped and packaged for the Avon Farmers Market, local vendors, or online sales—keeping it as pure and natural as possible.

Our slow-evaporation method maximizes mineral retention. Unlike refined table salt, premium unrefined sea salt contains up to 87 trace minerals essential for immune, digestive, and circulatory health, plus skin benefits. As a natural exfoliant and antimicrobial, it balances oil production and boosts circulation—our body's largest organ. On the island, indulge in a "Sea Salt Serenity" body wrap at Spa Koru in Avon, NC, blending our salt with shea butter and a gentle massage for radiant, refreshed skin.

At the Avon Farmers Market, we love sharing our "Infused Electrolyte Water." A pinch of solar-evaporated sea salt per 16 oz. of water creates conductive ions for cellular hydration, nerve signaling, and daily refreshment. Favorites include Cucumber-Watermelon, Lemon-Ginger, and Strawberry-Lime. The ocean supplies vital minerals for optimal health—and we're thrilled to share them with you.

  • Ocean8 Challenge: Master the Waves with Confidence

A day of firsts From the beach it had all looked so calm and flat. The sun was shining and kids were building sandcastles, but as we left the sheltered bay the wind picked up and transformed our serene haven into a choppy, pushy mess. Even the sun made a quick escape, adding to the sense of exposure and vulnerability. It’s OK, I told myself; you’ve done this a million times before. You’ve even got a safety paddler. Turning my head for a breath, I stole a sneaky glimpse at Dave, my long-time

An enormous orca leaps clean into the air and plunges back down, splashing into the ocean. It’s a welcome that Jim and I won’t forget as we step out onto the viewing deck for some fresh air while our ferry steams through the Minch. Utilising the royal flush of transport to get here (car, train, bus, and ferry), this journey may have taken an entire 24 hours, but we have certainly reached one of the extremities of the United Kingdom. The whale gives us another flyby before presumably returni

  • Reconnecting: A Solo Trail Run Through Snow-Covered Peaks

Snow falls from a stark white sky as we wordlessly pick our way through gullies, scrambling over boulders and crags towards the saddle between two peaks. After an hour of hard climbing, we stand for a moment at the top before picking the pace back up and heading north over grassy fells and bog. We settle into a rhythm, and enjoy a perfect trail run alone in our thoughts as we zip across the ancient terrain. The memories and stress of the year fall behind us with every step as we soak up the
