Chattanooga's Southern sandstone is among the finest in the U.S., offering unmatched variety and quality. Don't just take our word for it—Cody Averbeck, co-author of the definitive guidebook Chatt Steel, shares on Rock/Creek's blog:
Southern Sandstone, specifically the type found in Chattanooga, has some of the greatest variety of rock characteristics and personality found in any rock type, in any region—in America. Our sandstone has so much variation in such a small area that local Chattanooga climbers can swap crags like they swap seasonal clothing styles.
With year-round access (though summers can be intensely hot), Chattanooga boasts exceptional amenities for visiting climbers. Hundreds of routes lie within a 45-minute drive from downtown, allowing climbers to base in the city and enjoy restaurants and attractions on rest days. The Crash Pad is a top choice, providing affordable lodging in Chattanooga’s Southside plus invaluable local insights.
Chattanooga excels across disciplines: bouldering, traditional, and sport climbing. “If you love all three disciplines of climbing, this place is a gold mine,” says Chad Wykle, head buyer for Rock/Creek, who moved here over a decade ago for the climbing. “You could spend a lifetime here and never do all that you wanted to do.”
Bouldering enthusiasts will love the Triple Crown Bouldering Series, organized by Wykle and Jim Horton. This multi-day, multi-location competition highlights regional talent and ties into RiverRocks, the area's premier outdoor adventure series.
