Band Background: Birds with Fleas started as Matt Siegel’s solo project in North Carolina. Originally from Fairfax, VA, Siegel attended the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, where he crafted his debut album, The Campfire. Back in VA for summer break, he recruited high school choir friend Spencer Karges as guitarist. After a year in North Carolina, they moved to Chattanooga so Karges could be nearer his girlfriend (now wife). There, they joined forces with drummer Drew Daniels. The trio played debut album tracks for a year before creating their sophomore release, Wider Seas, blending electronic and rock for a polished sound. In Chattanooga, they've built a local following through consistent gigs and new material, later adding bassist James Skelley. The band releases Wider Seas on Saturday, December 12, at Barking Legs Theater. Nooga.com critic Joshua Pickard calls it "communal and refreshingly devoid of synthetic emotion at a time when connecting personally with listeners is the exception."
