3 Must-See Exhibits at the Charles H. Coolidge National Medal of Honor Heritage CenterOn March 25, 1863, the first Medal of Honor—our nation's highest military award for valor—was presented to Private Jacob Parrott for his role in “The Great Locomotive Chase,” which concluded just outside Chattanooga, Tennessee. Ultimately, 19 of the 24 members of Andrews’ Raiders received the Medal of Honor for their valor on April 12, 1862. The following year, the Chattanooga area became hallowed ground, with 33 additional Medals awarded—from Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge to the famed “Battle Above the Clouds” on Lookout Mountain.

These pioneering acts of valor established a vital heritage entrusted to Chattanooga as the Birthplace of the Medal of Honor. This deep historical connection makes Chattanooga the perfect home for the Charles H. Coolidge National Medal of Honor Heritage Center.

Chattanooga native Charles H. Coolidge, the center's namesake, earned the Medal of Honor for his heroism in France during World War II. His story is one of many inspiring tales you'll discover during your visit.

3 Must-See Exhibits at the Charles H. Coolidge National Medal of Honor Heritage CenterThe Heritage Center educates visitors on the six character traits exemplified by Medal of Honor recipients: Patriotism, Citizenship, Courage, Integrity, Sacrifice, and Commitment. It drives lasting impact among youth through the Medal of Honor Character Development Program and Character Club initiatives, including dedicated classroom space and community outreach.

Here are 3 must-see highlights:

1. “Honoring the Sacrifice: Medals of Honor through Time”

The inaugural temporary exhibit showcases stories and actual Medals of Honor from recipients across U.S. history, including the Civil War, Vietnam, Spanish-American War, and more. Borrowed from collectors and institutions nationwide, it inspires visitors with “extraordinary acts of valor by ordinary individuals.” On view through May 13.

2. Hacksaw Ridge

The story of Medal of Honor recipient Desmond Doss will resonate with movie fans. The only conscientious objector to receive the Medal, Doss saved 75 men during the Battle of Okinawa without carrying a weapon—a tale immortalized in Mel Gibson’s 2016 film Hacksaw Ridge. Visitors learn his WWII heroism and practice tying the Double Bowline knot he used to lower soldiers to safety.

3. Dr. Walker

This exhibit delves into the life and Civil War exploits of Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, the only female Medal of Honor recipient. Defying societal constraints, she became a tireless advocate for soldiers. Walk through a recreation of Second Presbyterian Church, where she treated the wounded.
