Rainbow Lake Trail: Scenic Family Hike on Signal Mountain Near Chattanooga

Chattanooga boasts over 50 trailheads within 30 minutes of downtown, earning it a spot among the nation's top hiking destinations. From Lookout Mountain's slopes to the Tennessee River Gorge's rugged crests, the Scenic City offers a diverse network of exceptional trails.

Lookout Mountain features numerous excellent single- and double-track trails. Nearby Signal Mountain, the southern end of the Cumberland Plateau, is another hiking haven with standout sections of the renowned Cumberland Trail.

For an accessible, memorable outing with family or friends, the Rainbow Lake Trail is ideal. Constructed in 1916 for the Signal Mountain Hotel (now Alexian Village), this trail remains one of Signal Mountain's premier outdoor spots. Starting from the Ohio Avenue parking lot, you'll stroll past the golf course and an historic spring house. At the 0.5-mile mark, choose left for a quick descent to Rainbow Lake or continue straight for a rocky, challenging 2.3-mile loop around the lake.

Either route leads to Middle Creek, where the 1916 dam often spills cascading water. Nearby, a scenic hemlock and laurel grove hides a 100-foot suspension bridge over the creek—a highlight of the Cumberland Trail. It's an inviting spot to cool off in summer; pack a float or simply wade in the creek.

For more adventure, follow the Cumberland Trail south along Middle Creek's trailhead side for 1.4 miles to Signal Point. This rocky path offers stunning overlooks and a steep final climb, followed by a 0.5-mile road walk back to your car. Cross the bridge and head toward Edwards Point, or create a loop including it—options depend only on your time and stamina.

Suited for hikers and families, the trail mixes easy gravel paths with optional rugged sections. Children love the suspension bridge and creek play area. Locate the trailhead on Ohio Avenue near the golf course and Alexian Village: Follow signs to Signal Point, passing Alexian Village until it appears on your left.
