Tempe, Arizona: Premier Destination for Elite Triathlons
Athletes worldwide flock to Tempe, Arizona, for top-tier triathlon competitions. Renowned as one of the nation's premier hosts for high-caliber events, Tempe offers the perfect setting: miles of spectator-friendly running and biking paths, convenient access to Tempe Town Lake, and ideal year-round weather.
This year, Tempe welcomed the Life Time Triathlon and Arizona's first Major League Triathlon (MLT) event. As the U.S.'s inaugural professional triathlon league, MLT saw Tempe's Arizona King Snakes host the third stop of their 2018 national tour at Tempe Beach Park on September 22, 2018.
The international event featured seven teams of four pros each (two men, two women) in a fast-paced Mixed Team Relay. Each athlete swam 300 meters, biked 4 miles, and ran 1 mile before tagging the next teammate—all without leaving Tempe Beach Park. Crowds of locals, friends, and family from across the U.S. watched the action. Arizona King Snakes won gold, San Diego Stingrays took silver, and Gold Coast Tritons earned bronze. This format debuts at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Tempe draws triathletes of all ages from Arizona and beyond—retirees, Arizona State University students, families with children, and more. The city hosts numerous triathlons and a major conference in the coming months.
