Tucked away in Downtown Tempe's evolving urban scene, House of Tricks feels like a refreshing oasis—a lush green haven amid the concrete.

Named after owners Bob and Robin Trick, this cozy restaurant occupies two historic homes that have evolved alongside the city over the past 30 years.
In 1987, the couple left their corporate jobs to transform an old house into a neighborhood spot seating just 11 guests. It expanded organically, as Robin Trick explains: “It didn’t happen all at once.”
Today, the space features a signature bar wrapped around a tree on the deck connecting the original house to the adjacent one—a lively gathering spot for an eclectic crowd. Business professionals and ASU Gammage patrons mix with locals and tourists. “You can wear a suit or shorts,” Trick notes. “You’ll see both. We’re not pretentious. We’re real people.”
While craft cocktails and beers shine, House of Tricks is renowned for its wine program: 25 options by the glass and an extensive by-the-bottle list suited to every taste and budget.
The intimate indoor tables contrast with the recently renovated front patio, ideal for groups or events. Executive Chef Scott Umscheid draws from Midwestern roots, while Kitchen Manager Andrea Bales infuses Asian flair. Their menus offer inventive twists on classics, including staples like harissa-spiced mussels and whole grain mustard-cider braised Beeler’s pork volcano shank, plus seasonal starters perfect for sharing that rotate twice yearly.

With three decades of success, Trick credits their community focus: “People come to Tricks because of how they feel when they’re there. It’s comfortable. You’ll probably run into someone you know. It’s the whole experience. The feeling hasn’t changed.”
