Inspiring Futures: Johnson High School Students Tour Sun Country Airlines Hangar
For the second consecutive year, Sun Country Airlines welcomed students from Johnson High School—St. Paul's premier aerospace and engineering magnet school—for an exclusive hangar tour. Located in our hometown, the school weaves aviation themes into most science and technology courses. We connected with Rob Mason, a passionate teacher there and valued Sun Country employee, for insights into this dynamic program.
Rob leads Introduction to Aviation and the new Advanced Aviation courses, powered by state-of-the-art flight simulators funded through grants and support from local businesses and aviation enthusiasts. The advanced class bridges classroom learning to real flight, preparing students to pilot from KSTP, St. Paul Downtown Airport. It recently received a major boost: a donated Cessna 172 for practical training.
Unique among programs, Johnson High serves many inner-city St. Paul students experiencing airplanes for the first time. The hangar tour captivates them—seeing aircraft up close and strolling the aisles is a yearly highlight they rave about. It has launched several alumni into top aviation colleges nationwide. This summer, Rob offers a two-week aviation-focused STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) course.
This year marks the second time these students, guided by Rob, explored Sun Country’s main hangar, SOC, and maintenance facilities. Their awe and newfound inspiration for aviation careers are profoundly rewarding.
Why this tour matters to Rob:
"This tour is especially meaningful to us at Sun Country. Seeing students discover our craft—what we love most—fuels our passion. Offering chances to spark careers or lifelong interests is why we do this."
